ASI Military-Connected Students Representative

Picture of Joel Cook, ASI representative for military-connected students.

My name is Joel Cook and I am your Military-Connected Students Representative for Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) at Cal State LA. I was a CalVet recipient when I attended Cal Poly Pomona in 2004 as a dependent student of an Army veteran. I joined the military and was active duty in the Navy from 2007-2013 and restarted my undergraduate studies at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, CA in 2016. I became a Cal State LA student in Fall 2018 working towards a degree in Mechanical Engineering. I am also a Peer Mentor with the Veterans Resource Center (VRC).

One of my passions is advocating for military-connected students in higher education and amplifying the voice of our growing but misunderstood population. Through ASI, we have access to the top leadership of our University and the opportunity to be heard and to address the concerns of our unique population.

My goals are to increase the involvement of military-connected students, build a diverse and supportive community of veterans and dependents, and support the academic and professional success of every student. We will work together to ensure we are represented in the leadership and direction of this institution and to remove any obstacles to our success.

No question or concern is too small or obscure to be heard and addressed honestly. Please reach out to me in the VRC during office hours or through email at asivarep@calstatela.edu.

Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you!
