University Writing Center

PARDON OUR DUST: Please bear with us while we revise our website.

Welcome to the University Writing Center's homepage. Our mission is to help each student who comes to us become a better writer. We are located in the John F. Kennedy Library, Palmer Wing room 1039A. Please visit us or call us at (323) 343-5350.

Writing Center Services

The Writing Center offers a variety of services to the entire CSULA student body. You can come in with any type of writing assignment at any stage of the process. We can help you understand the assignment, organize, and revise your paper. We can even help you learn to proofread for your most common mistakes. While you can drop in for tutoring, the best way to get one-to-one feedback is to make an appointment. The process is on our Tutoring Services page. In addition to one-to-one tutoring for students, we also offer support for the WPE.

The Writing Center provides tutoring and other assistance for all CSULA courses, from pre- baccalaureate composition courses to graduate seminars. In general, these services are not remedial, but are instead a powerful alternative or supplement to traditional modes of classroom instruction. We are strongly focused on the long-term development of individual writers rather than quick fixes for the paper at hand.

Writing Proficiency Exam

We provide student support services for the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR), consisting of the Writing Proficiency Exam (WPE) or UNIV 4010, the course alternative to the exam. We offer workshops to help students prepare for the WPE, consultation for those who want to review their passing or non-passing exam, and general information and advice for students about satisfying the GWAR, either by taking the WPE or UNIV 4010. Our goal is to help students improve their writing and meet the University's writing requirement in a timely manner.

For more information about eligibility and registration for the WPE, please visit the Testing Center website, or call them at (323) 343-3160.

PAIR - Peer-Aided Information Research Program

Library research assistance is available in the University Writing Center to help students conduct research. A PAIR assistant can also help students with formatting and documentation, using APA, MLA, and other styles. Spring semester PAIR hours are 12:00-6:00 PM Monday-Thursday, from February 6 to May 4 (Weeks 3-15). No appointment is necessary — just walk over to the person at the table with the PAIR sign on it.
