ANNOUNCEMENT: Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR) / WPE

The Academic Senate has approved new GWAR policies for graduate and undergraduate students. Undergraduate students are no longer required to take the Writing Proficiency Exam (WPE) or UNIV 4000.

FAQ:

How do students meet the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR)?

Undergraduate students satisfy the CSU Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement by passing the Upper-Division Disciplinary Writing Requirement with a grade of C or better. This course emphasizes practices, conventions, and strategies appropriate to writing in the discipline.

Beginning in Fall 2017, Graduate students will be exempt from UNIV 4000 or the course alternative, UNIV 4010, if they hold an earned bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university where English is the primary medium of instruction.  Graduate students are also exempt from UNIV 4000 if they have a score of 41 or better on the writing portion of the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) or a score of 4 on the analytic writing portion of the GRE or GMAT.

(Undergraduates) Will I need to take an additional course? No, every major includes an upper-division disciplinary writing course as one of its graduation requirements.

How can I enroll in a course that requires the WPE as a pre-requisite?  The WPE is no longer a pre-requisite for any undergraduate courses. Pre-requisites have been lifted.

(International Graduate Students) How do I know if I am exempt from this requirement? We will be evaluating the status of all graduate students over the summer and sending out notifications to students mid-August, before Fall semester begins.

I need to improve my writing, how can I get help? The University Writing Center (UWC) offers one-to-one writing services to the entire student body. Peer-tutors can help students understand, organize, and revise their assignment. They also work with students on writing a personal statement for a scholarship, internship, or a graduate program. The University Writing Center is located in the JFK Library, Palmer Wing, Room 1039A. Students may call the UWC at 323-343-5350 to make an appointment.

Who should I contact if I have additional questions: The Testing Office will be happy to answer questions about the WPE.  They are located in the JFK Library, Palmer Wing, room 2098 and can be reached by phone at 323-343-3160.

WPE Payment Information:

International Graduate Students are highly recommended to register for the UNIV 4000 (WPE) prior to paying the non-refundable $25.00 fee at the Cashiers Office. Only payments by cash, check or money order are accepted at the Cashier’s Office. Credit Card, debit card, and electronic check payments can be made online through CASHNet Smartpay.   It is strongly advised that students register into UNIV 4000 (WPE) prior to paying the non-refundable $25 fee.

THE CSU PLACEMENT TESTS - EPT & ELM

Executive Order 665 requires all incoming freshman in the CSU take the English Placement Test (EPT) and the Entry Level Mathematics (ELM) test prior to enrollment in the CSU unless exempt by means scores earned on the ACT/SAT/EAP.  These are not admissions tests, but rather placement tools that will determine your eligibility to enroll in specific math and/or English courses.
