Major Specific Declaration Requirements

Major Specific Declaration Requirements for Cal State LA Students

All students must have a declared major by the time they reach 60 earned units. This applies equally to students who are:

  • Undeclared
  • Have been admitted into a ‘pre-major’ and are requesting to declare the major
  • Requesting to change major
  • Requesting to add a major
While freshmen are admitted directly into some majors, many majors require that students begin as pre-majors and then declare the major if and when they complete the major specific criteria. Except for Nursing, native Cal State LA students can ‘declare a major’ if they meet the major specific minimum cumulative GPA and complete the required lower division preparation courses.

The criteria listed in the first section below will be used for consideration prior to May 15, 2020. Effective Fall 2020, all majors have major specific criteria. The second section details these criteria which will be used after May 15, 2020. To review the detailed major specific declaration requirements, select the name of the appropriate major. Be aware that these criteria are subject to change in the future.

It is expected that students will complete study toward their baccalaureate degree in no more than 120% (144 units for a standard 120-unit program) of the units required by their primary degree program, including a second major or any minors. There may be additional limits on the ability to add a second major or to add/change degree objectives. See Making Sufficient Progress in the Major.
