Do I have to attend Orientation?

Yes. Golden Eagle Orientation and Academic Advisement are mandatory for all new freshmen and transfer students and returning students.

How/when do I sign up for Orientation?

Provisionally admitted students who have paid the Enrollment Confirmation Deposit (ECD) will receive an email beginning April 2018 with instructions on how to sign up for one of the Golden Eagle Orientation programs.

I paid the Enrollment Confirmation Deposit, but I still haven't received an email about Orientation. Why is that?

It can take up to a week for ECD payments to fully process, and the invitation emails generally go out once a week on Friday mornings. For instance, if you pay the ECD on a Thursday, you may not receive the Orientation email until the following Friday. We do appreciate your patience during this process. If you paid the ECD and more than a week has passed, please contact our office and we can further assist you.

When is the deadline to sign up for Orientation?

All reservations and payments must be received no later than June 1, 2018. Reservations are taken on a first-come, first-served basis. Failure to complete your reservation process by this deadline may result in your admissions being rescinded, which means you would not be able to attend Cal State LA in fall 2018. Please make absolutely sure to complete your reservation on time!

How will I know what classes are available?

Access GET via your Student Portal, and search for classes under your desired academic term (for example, fall semester 2018). Additionally, you can learn about specific courses you should be taking during your group advisement session with your college's academic and/or department advisors. Additional advisement information can be found in the Online Pre-Orientation.

Will I receive individual help to select my classes?

Individual academic counseling/advising is not available. All advising/counseling takes place in a group setting. Be sure to complete the Online Pre-Orientation, and take advantage of the resources found in your Student Portal. Bring any questions about classes you have with you, in order to get the most out of your group advisement appointment.

What if I need to change my major?

Orientation can assist with you with receiving the correct advisement for your intended major. If you are currently registered with one major, but are certain that you will be changing your major, you should contact our office so we can help you identify the correct Orientation session to attend. Please be aware of the following conditions:

  • Reserving/attending an Orientation session different from your original major does not change your major. You will need to complete a Change of Major form once school begins to officially change your major.
  • Requesting an Orientation session for a major with major-specific-criteria does not guarantee you admission to that program. You will still need to apply/meet any additional requirements for that program in order to be successfully admitted. For more information regarding the specific admissions requirements for impacted majors, please contact that specific department.

How much does it cost to attend Orientation?

Golden Eagle Orientation is $70.00 for freshmen, transfer students, and returning students. Freshman Overnight Orientation is $150. The Parent and Family Support Orientation guest fee is $46.00.

Will Financial Aid cover my Orientation fee or ID card?

No. Financial Aid does not cover the Orientation Fee or the Golden Eagle One Card (school ID), and Fee Deferments/Waivers cannot be accepted under any circumstances.

Will a meal be provided?

Lunch will be served at approx. 12 pm for Golden Eagle Orientation participants. It is strongly recommended that you eat breakfast before you arrive, or pack a snack if you will need to eat before that time. Unfortunately, we are not able to accommodate Halal or Kosher meals. Please contact our office if you have any other dietary restrictions well in advance of your Orientation date.

Are overnight accommodations available?

Accommodations are provided for students participating in the Freshman Overnight Orientation program. One night's stay in University Housing is included in the cost of this program.

For students not participating in the above program, overnight accommodations are available on-campus for students attending Orientation and one parent/guardian only. May I bring a guest?

Freshmen may bring a parent/guardian or family support member to any date designated as a Parent and Family Support Orientation day. Freshmen are not permitted to bring guests to any other days, as all other days are for students only.

Transfer students may bring a parent/guardian or family support member to any date designated for Transfer Orientation, but the available spaces are very limited. Once capacity is reached, no additional guests will be accommodated.

How long is Orientation?

  • One-day program
  • Check-in will begin at 8:00 am
  • The program will begin promptly at 8:30 am (late arrivals will not be admitted), and should end at approximately 4 pm
  • You are required to be present for the FULL DAY in order to receive credit for attending. If for any reason you cannot attend the full day, you will need to schedule a different Orientation date that will allow you to attend the full day.
