ELIGIBILITY

Commencement is the ceremony in which degrees are conferred on candidates who are eligible to graduate for a given term. To be eligible to participate in the 2019 Commencement ceremonies, graduating candidates must fulfill the following requirements:

  1. File to graduate by the published deadlines, or before April 4, 2019, for the eligible declared graduation terms listed above.

  2. Be on track to complete their degree requirements by the end of the eligible declared graduation terms listed above. To officially graduate from Cal State LA, students must satisfy all university, college, and departmental requirements for a specific degree.

  3. Register to participate in the Commencement ceremonies by reserving guest tickets during Grad Fair in April 10 or 11, 2019, OR online from April 22 — May 3, 2019.

LATE APPLICANTS

Candidates who submit their graduation application after April 4, 2019, will not be able to register to participate by reserving guest tickets during Grad Fair. However, they will be able to reserve guest tickets during the open registration period online from April 22 to May 3, 2019. After May 3, 2019, all eligible candidates are not guaranteed to be able to participate in the ceremonies and/or able to obtain guest tickets.

Please note that it can take 5 - 10 business days for the graduation application to be processed and verified, by the Graduation Office, before it is submitted for inclusion in the ceremonies to the Commencement Planning Committee. Please take this into account when submitting your graduation application after the published deadline dates listed above.

COMMENCEMENT BOOK LISTING

Fall 2018 and winter 2019 graduates are automatically listed in the printed Commencement book. In addition, candidates who submitted a graduation application for spring 2019 or summer 2019 on or before April 4, and are projected to graduate during these terms, are also included. Students who submit a late graduation application after April 4, 2019, will not be included in the book. Inclusion in the printed book does not guarantee graduation from the University, nor is the list inclusive. The name listed will be the primary name as it appears on the graduating candidate's GET account.

REQUEST FOR NON-LISTING

If graduating candidates do not wish their name, degree or honor (if any) listed in the printed Commencement booklet, please email commencement@calstatela.edu no later than April 4, 2019.

AWARDS AND RECOGNITION

BACCALAUREATE GRADUATION WITH HONORS

Graduating candidates obtaining a bachelor's degree, who maintain an outstanding academic record while earning their degree, are accorded special recognition upon graduation and are given honor cords to wear during Commencement. To be eligible for honors, the graduating candidate must have completed a minimum of 45 units in residence at Cal State LA and have attained the appropriate standing (in terms of cumulative grade point average earned at Cal State LA) as described below:

These honors are designated on the diploma and permanent academic record. In spring 2019, the college deans will notify eligible graduating candidates about their honor designation, and provide the date and location the honor cords can be picked-up.

VETERANS CORD

Each year, hundreds of military veterans proudly graduate from Cal State LA. To celebrate their academic achievement and their service to our country, the Veterans Resource Center hosts an annual event each spring for graduating military veterans. The event, attended by Cal State LA President William A. Covino and other campus administrators, honor our graduating military veterans with a Veterans Cord Ceremony. The red, white, and blue cord given to each graduating military veteran student can be worn with his/her regalia during Commencement.

For more information, please visit the Veterans Resource Center website or contact (323) 343-5080, or email vets@calstatela.edu.

DONOR CORDS

Support your graduating class by giving to Cal State LA, and you’ll be able to show your generosity at Commencement with a special black and yellow cord to wear with your regalia. To receive yours, purchase a Grad Pack during Grad Fair on April 10 and 11, or make a gift of $20.19 or more by clicking here — and be part of this new tradition!
