AWARDS AND RECOGNITION
BACCALAUREATE GRADUATION WITH HONORS
Graduating candidates obtaining a bachelor's degree, who maintain an outstanding academic record while earning their degree, are accorded special recognition upon graduation and are given honor cords to wear during Commencement. To be eligible for honors, the graduating candidate must have completed a minimum of 45 units in residence at Cal State LA and have attained the appropriate standing (in terms of cumulative grade point average earned at Cal State LA) as described below:
- Summa Cum Laude: GPA equal to or greater than 3.9
- Magna Cum Laude: GPA equal to or greater than 3.75 but less than 3.9
- Cum Laude: GPA equal to or greater than 3.5 but less than 3.75
These honors are designated on the diploma and permanent academic record. In spring 2019, the college deans will notify eligible graduating candidates about their honor designation, and provide the date and location the honor cords can be picked-up.
Each year, hundreds of military veterans proudly graduate from Cal State LA. To celebrate their academic achievement and their service to our country, the Veterans Resource Center hosts an annual event each spring for graduating military veterans. The event, attended by Cal State LA President William A. Covino and other campus administrators, honor our graduating military veterans with a Veterans Cord Ceremony. The red, white, and blue cord given to each graduating military veteran student can be worn with his/her regalia during Commencement.
Support your graduating class by giving to Cal State LA, and you’ll be able to show your generosity at Commencement with a special black and yellow cord to wear with your regalia. To receive yours, purchase a Grad Pack during Grad Fair on April 10 and 11, or make a gift of $20.19 or more by clicking here — and be part of this new tradition!

For the safety and security of all our guests, faculty and staff, all graduating candidates must pass through security at the designated student check-in entrance next to the Physical Education building across from the Engineering & Technology building. All bags are subject to search by security personnel, including purses, camera cases and diaper bags.
For safety and accessibility, bags that graduating candidates bring must fit under their seat without impeding aisle space and walkways. Graduating candidates, who registered to participate, must check in 60 minutes before the ceremony next to the Physical Education building, across from the Engineering & Technology building. Candidates must present their Cal State LA I.D. or a government issued photo I.D. to pick-up their pre-printed name cards to present to the name readers and photographers. Please plan accordingly to allow sufficient time to park, pick up the name card, line up, and be pre-seated.
All candidates will be pre-seated 30 minutes before the ceremony by degree and major. The Commencement book and day of program will be at each seat. Doors to the University Gymnasium will be closed 5 minutes before the ceremony starts, to prepare for the academic procession of the faculty and platform party. All candidates who arrive late will not be allowed inside the gymnasium until after the national anthem.
The order of events may vary per Commencement ceremony.
All candidates participating in the commencement ceremonies must stay for the entire duration of the ceremony. Each ceremony is about 1 hour and 30 minutes in length. Please plan accordingly. In addition, any disruptive behavior, including being inebriated, will not be tolerated and the candidate will not be allowed to participate in the remainder of the ceremony, and will escorted off the premise. Please note that there is no smoking, including e-cigarettes, on campus.
During Commencement, there will be a first aid tent located near the Student Health Center. Graduates and guests requiring onsite first aid are welcome to visit as needed. Emergency and ambulance services will be on call and onsite and can be activated by any of the Commencement staff.
